SRU Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce that the second installment of its annual ornament series with Wendell August Forge features the iconic North County Brew Pub.

The 2023 ornament is the second in a collection of pieces crafted by Wendell August Forge, continuing the annual series, designed to create snapshots of Slippery Rock’s heritage and history.

Constructed in the early 1800s, the Brew Pub was originally registered as an inn, owned by Peter Uber and his son, William. In 1850, the Ubers added the existing storefront to the original house, utilizing deconstructed barnwood for building materials. The rustic beams from the barn are still in place in the Brew Pub today.

The Ubers transitioned their business from innkeeping to cabinet making and, during the Civil War, ventured into coffin making. Their business grew to include undertaking and became Uber and Sons Undertakers and Furniture Dealers. The business flourished, and in the mid-1800s, William passed ownership on to his son, Carrol, who, in the early 1900s, enlarged the property to its present size.

The funeral home remained in business until Carrol’s son, Elton North Uber, retired in 1974. At that time, Elton’s son, Edward, continued the family business as a furniture store for 20 more years.

In the spring of 1998, Jodi and Bob McCafferty purchased the storefront and began renovations, personally rebuilding the structure from the foundation through the roof with local hardwoods and recycled on-site materials. The McCaffertys handcrafted the woods left from the Uber’s furniture store into the custom pieces found in the Brew Pub today.

North Country Brewing Company opened its doors in 2005 and quickly became a staple for those living in or visiting Slippery Rock. The McCaffertys, and their businesses, have become cherished community partners, donating funds, time and resources for the betterment of Slippery Rock and the surrounding areas. Their annual BrewFests have raised more than $50,000 for Slippery Rock Development, and North Country Brewing sponsors local events such as VillageFest, Light Up Night and Slippery Rock Oktoberfest, as well as a plethora of fundraising efforts across the area.

The McCaffertys are celebrating their 25th year in business in 2023, ushering in a new era for the Brew Pub, focusing their culinary efforts on fresh, locally grown and sustainable ingredients.
